FAQ
What are bylaws, and why does our church need them?
Bylaws are the rules that explain how our church is organized and governed. They help define leadership responsibilities, how decisions are made, and how the congregation participates in important matters. They also provide a framework for accountability and consistency.
Why is New Ridge Fellowship proposing revised bylaws?
Since becoming an independent church in October 2023, New Ridge Fellowship has continued to develop its leadership structure. Reviewing our bylaws is an important part of making sure our governing documents reflect who we are today and how we operate as a church.
The proposed revisions are intended to provide greater clarity about leadership responsibilities, decision-making, and accountability as we continue pursuing our mission.
Why are we making these changes now?
As part of our ongoing work to strengthen the church's leadership and governance, the Leadership Council has been reviewing our governing documents with guidance from outside consultants and legal counsel.
This process has provided an opportunity to identify areas that need clarification or updating.
Who was involved in developing the proposed bylaws, and what was the process?
Over the past year, much prayer, conversation, and hard work have gone into preparing for this next chapter in the life of our church. The proposed bylaws are the result of a collaborative effort involving the Leadership Council, Catalyst teams, and the Center Consulting Group.
Together, these groups have worked to develop bylaws that reflect the needs and values of our church community, provide strong and healthy governance based on the Center Consulting Group's experience and recommendations, and align with a comprehensive legal review. We are grateful for everyone who has dedicated their time, wisdom, and effort to this important process.
Are these changes being made because something is wrong with our church?
The purpose of reviewing our bylaws is to strengthen our church's governance and prepare responsibly for the future. Healthy organizations periodically review their governing documents to ensure they continue serving their mission.
What is the role of the Leadership Council under the proposed bylaws?
In our Bylaws, the Leadership Council provides governance and oversight for the church. The proposed bylaws, together with the Authority Matrix, explain the Council's responsibilities and how authority is shared among church leadership.
What is the role of the Lead Pastor under the proposed bylaws?
The Lead Pastor provides spiritual and ministry leadership for New Ridge Fellowship. The proposed bylaws and Authority Matrix help clarify the Lead Pastor's responsibilities, decision-making authority, and accountability.
What is the Authority Matrix, and why is it important?
The Authority Matrix is a document that helps explain who is responsible for making certain decisions within the church.
It identifies where authority rests and how church leaders work together. Its purpose is to reduce confusion, improve accountability, and provide greater clarity about leadership responsibilities.
Does the congregation have a voice in important church decisions?
Yes. The congregation gains greater responsibilities and opportunities to participate in church decisions as outlined in the proposed bylaws.
The proposed bylaws identify which matters require congregational participation or affirmation and which responsibilities belong to church leadership.
What safeguards are in place to hold church leaders accountable?
The proposed bylaws and Authority Matrix are intended to establish clear responsibilities, appropriate oversight, and accountability among church leaders.
What are task forces, and what authority do they have?
Task forces may be formed by the Leadership Council to study specific matters, provide recommendations, and assist with projects that support the church's mission.
Under the proposed language, task forces are accountable to the Lead Pastor and Leadership Council. They do not have authority to act on behalf of the church unless that authority has been expressly granted.
What will happen at the November 15 Congregational Meeting?
The congregation will gather to consider and affirm the proposed revised bylaws presented by the Leadership Council. The meeting will provide an opportunity for our church family to participate in this important step in the life of New Ridge Fellowship.
Will the congregation have the opportunity to affirm the proposed bylaws?
Yes. Our current bylaws only allow amendments to the bylaws to be made by a majority vote of the Leadership Council. The Leadership Council will vote to approve the proposed bylaws under the condition of a majority affirmation of the Active Members who are present at the Congregational Meeting on Nov 15. Refer to the proposed bylaws above for the definition of Active Member.
Moving forward, all bylaw changes will require a two thirds affirmation by the active members of the congregation at an annual Church meeting after a proposal from the Leadership Council.
What is the difference between voting and affirmation when it comes to the proposed bylaws?
Voting and affirmation serve different purposes in this process. The Leadership Council is responsible for reviewing, considering, and voting on the proposed bylaws. Once approved by the Leadership Council, the bylaws are presented to the congregation for affirmation.
Congregational affirmation is an opportunity for our church family to express its support for the bylaws approved by the Leadership Council. Rather than voting to approve or reject the proposed bylaws, the congregation is being invited to affirm the direction established by church leadership.
This process reflects the different responsibilities of the Leadership Council and the congregation as we move forward together as one church family.
What if I am unsure about my membership status?
Please contact the church office at 610-323-2353 or email us at info@newridgefellowship.com so your membership status can be reviewed before the meeting.
What is the difference between the proposed bylaws and the Authority Matrix?
The bylaws establish the church's governing structure, responsibilities, and procedures. The Authority Matrix provides additional clarity about how leadership responsibilities and decision-making authority are assigned within that structure. Together, these documents help explain how our church is governed.
How can I submit questions about the proposed bylaws?
A digital question submission form is available on the same webpage as the proposed bylaws.
Members can use this form to submit questions for review. When submitting a question, please include the specific section or paragraph number whenever possible. CLICK HERE to submit a question
Will there be opportunities to ask questions in person?
Yes. Leadership Council members will be available at a table in the lobby following all worship services on November 1 and November 8 to help answer questions. However, we highly encourage you not to wait until those Sundays to ask your questions. By submitting them now, you will help our Leadership Council better prepare for those conversations and provide thoughtful, helpful responses. Please note that during the Nov 15 meeting, there will not be a time for questions.
Will printed copies of the proposed bylaws be available?
Yes. Members who prefer a printed copy may request one at the Welcome Desk on Sunday Mornings.
